(Fredericton, NB) – The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Clubs of Fredericton co-hosted their third joint luncheon on 21 October 2013. The guest speaker was Dr. Lynn Hansen, president of the New Brunswick Medical Society and anesthesiologist at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton.

Dr. Hansen outlined the details of the medical society's new strategy for improving patient care in the province, Care First. The strategy contains four primary pillars: primary care, listening to front-line workers, wait times and healthier living. The complete strategy can be found on their website at

The chamber has been particularly focused on the primary care issue in recent years – principally through its Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee, which has been in operation since 2007.

"Our members have told us year-after-year that access to primary care in the province is a major concern for businesses of all sizes," added Chris Johnston, chamber president. "From recruiting and retaining skilled employees to the province to attracting existing companies or entrepreneurs, one of the first questions that is always asked is whether a family physician will be accessible upon arrival. In recent years, this paradigm has shifted from family physicians to primary care, but the issue remains largely the same."

"We were pleased to hear Dr. Hansen and the medical society is focused on enhancing community partnerships as part of their strategy," added Krista Ross, CEO of the chamber. "The chamber is always keen to work with community stakeholders on issues that are important to our members. Just in the past year, our Physician Recruitment and Retention committee has engaged the medical society, Horizon Health, the Department of Health, individual physicians, medical students and residents, and others in our efforts."

With more than 900 members, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is one of Atlantic Canada's largest chambers of commerce. A dynamic business organization, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is actively engaged in policy development that affects the competitiveness of our members and of the Canadian business environment.
