(Fredericton, NB) – The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, through an award selection committee, has named Leticia de Gante the first recipient of its Intercultural Business Centre’s Person of the Year. Janet Moser, Director of “The Hive” the chamber’s intercultural business incubator made the announcement at last night’s State of the City Address.

Ms de Gante is a graduate of the chamber’s Business Immigrant Mentorship Program and has started three successful businesses in the city since her arrival in 2009: Leticia de Gante Landscaping, de Gante Authentic Mexican Jewelry and most recently, House of Stone.

de Gante, originally from Mexico, symbolizes the best that the business community has to offer, stating: “I strongly believe that a successful business can always be achieved through high professionalism and dedication.  However, the magnitude of success will always be determined by the level of honesty and integrity shown to your clients”

Assisting newcomers succeed in business has been a top priority for the chamber since the inception of its immigrant mentorship program in 2009.

“There is sometimes a perception that newcomers are a drain on the economy and they take jobs from native New Brunswickers,” Moser stated. “Whereas the reality tells quite a different story the newcomers that I have dealt with over the years are starting businesses, creating jobs and growing our economy they are investing in our community and it is important that we provide as much support as possible. Leticia is a perfect example.”

“Many of the participants in the mentorship program or The Hive are very successful business people in their home countries,” added Krista Ross, chamber CEO. “What they most often need assistance with is adjusting to life in a new culture, learning the ‘Canadian’ way of doing business, and integrating into the community. We are very proud to provide whatever help we can through these two programs.”
