Fredericton, 9 April 2015
For Immediate Release
The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is calling for applications for its annual post-secondary scholarship, now in its second year of existence.
Administered by the Fredericton Community Foundation, a one-time, non-renewable scholarship in the amount of $1000 will be awarded each year to an “…employee of a member in good standing of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, OR be the child, spouse or partner of a member or their employee.” The deadline to apply will be the last Friday in May of each year at 4:00 pm. Application forms and further instructions can be found at www.frederictonchamber.ca or www.fredfdn.ca.
“Awarding the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce scholarship is one of the highlights of the chamber year,” stated Joseph O’Donnell, chamber president. “I had a chance to talk with Alison Patterson, last year’s recipient, and was so pleased to be able to financially assist a young person in our community that is so highly motivated both inside and outside of the classroom.”
The scholarship is awarded by the chamber selection committee based a number of factors including, but not limited to: educational performance, work experience, community involvement, and extra-curricular activities.
“The selection committee is made up of six chamber past presidents and myself as an ex-officio member,” said Krista Ross, chamber CEO. “Being able to tap into resources like community-minded former chamber presidents is a blessing for the chamber. The chamber scholarship is a perfect way to connect our past, present and future in a meaningful way.”
“If the first year was any indication of the quantity and quality of applications, the selection committee will have a very difficult task,” Ross added. “Last year’s recipient, Alison Patterson was well deserving, but the selection committee would have been comfortable awarding the scholarship to a great number of the applicants. I’m also aware that many people aren’t sure if their organization, or their parent’s organization are chamber members. With 950 members employing 27,000 people there is a very chance that they are, so I’d encourage anyone to check out our membership directory at www.frederictonchamber.ca.”
The recipient of the scholarship will be formally recognized at a subsequent chamber event and featured on our website.
With more than 950 members, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is one of Atlantic Canada’s largest chambers of commerce. A dynamic business organization, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is actively engaged in policy development that affects the competitiveness of our members and of the Canadian business environment.
