pdfPress Release - Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Awards Annual Scholarships - September 15, 2015 (PDF - 242 KB)

15 September 2015- For Immediate Release

FREDERICTON, NB – The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce recently awarded its annual post-secondary scholarship to two deserving local students that graduated from Leo Hayes High School (“LHHS”) earlier this year - Drew Salmon and Taylor McGrattan.

A top academic performer and tireless worker from an early age, Drew is heading to Dalhousie University in the fall to pursue a career in medicine. In addition to academics and employment, Drew is involved in extracurricular activities both at his school - “Free the Children” program, the Best Buddies program, tutoring, amongst others - and in the community - Big Brothers Big Sisters, Canadian Diabetes Association and Junior Achievement.

Taylor, an accomplished student-athlete is attending the Saint John campus of the University of New Brunswick in September to study science and play varsity volleyball. Throughout her high school career, Taylor has been heavily involved in coaching, mentoring, dancing, fundraising and many other activities - all while maintaining a high level of academic achievement.

“Making the call to award our annual scholarship is one of the most exciting I get to do each year,” says chamber CEO Krista Ross. “The enthusiasm and gratitude from these students nearly comes through the phone - it’s an energizing experience. Both recipients in 2015 exemplify the best that our community has to offer. They combine high academic achievement with an understanding of the importance of being involved with their communities - I certainly hope both plan to return after their studies.”

“Any employee of a chamber member; or their child or their spouse that is attending a post-secondary institution in the fall is eligible for the scholarship,” added Stephen Hill, chamber president. Our members employ about 27,000 people, so there was an impressive pool of candidates from which to choose the recipient - or in this case, recipients. Taylor and Drew had very impressive applications and we wish them all the best in their studies.”

Administered by the Fredericton Community Foundation, recipients of the scholarship are selected by a panel of Fredericton chamber past-presidents.

“This is an important initiative for the chamber and a great way to keep our past presidents involved with our activities,” added Ross. “Maintaining links to our recent history through our past presidents is a priority for the chamber and I am grateful that so many of them continue to participate. Symbolically, it is not lost on me that the process involves the community’s past, present and future.”

The recipients received their scholarships at the chamber’s annual golf tournament on August 27, 2015.
