FREDERICTON, NB – The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce has announced the finalists for its 2015
Business Excellence Awards, which recognize outstanding business achievement and community involvement within the local business community. An awards dinner will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the Delta Fredericton.
The 2015 edition of the awards marks the first time that businesses and organizations outside of the chamber membership are eligible to be nominated.
“Our committee and board decided to expand the eligibility criteria of our awards this year to better reflect the increasing diversity of the city’s economic ecosystem,” said Krista Ross, chamber CEO. “Its part of an effort over the past several years to open up chamber events and activities to the general public. Its also an opportunity to provide more business connections - which is one of the main purposes of our existence.”
Each year, the awards selection committee is chaired by the chamber’s immediate past president and includes members from the local business community as well as other stakeholders.
“Events like our Business Excellence Awards are a wonderful opportunity to step back and recognize some of the great things happening in our region,” said Joseph O’Donnell, chair of the awards selection committee and immediate chamber past president. “Particularly during tough economic times, it is reinvigorating to spend an evening celebrating our success stories.”
In addition to the finalists in the six categories below, the awards selection committee has chosen Douglas Animal Hospital as the 2015 recipient of the KPMG Resilience Award. This award recognizes a business that has overcome a major challenge that was not exclusively financial in nature.
In July 2011 the Douglas Animal Hospital was badly damaged by an intentional fire set overnight, requiring the structure to be rebuilt. Less than one week later they were back up and running in an interim location on St. Mary’s Street.
“There was an outpouring of support from both clients and the general public, as well as other veterinary service providers in the city,” said Dr Jim Berry, one of the animal hospital owners. “The City also helped to ensure we could quickly move into a temporary clinic. From office equipment to medical supplies to space for surgery, our patients and owners continued to receive the best of care throughout the year-long ordeal because of the help we received from all of these groups - especially our very dedicated staff members.”
Other veterinary service providers in the city lent a helping hand with supplies and space for surgery, ensuring their animals continued to receive the best of care throughout the ordeal. In just under one year, the Douglas Animal Hospital was back into its original location.
“Stories like that of the Douglas Animal Hospital are the reason we are proud to have sponsored this award since its inception,” said Todd MacIntosh, Managing Partner for KPMG in New Brunswick. “They experienced a devastating setback, but through hard work and support from all corners of the Fredericton community, they were able to keep the business running, take care of their animals and be back in their location in under a year - they should be an inspiration to all entrepreneurs.”
