pdfMay 6, 2016 - Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Former Intern’s Life with Mental Health Awareness Event (PDF - 500kb)

Fredericton, NB

As part of Mental Health Week, on May 6, 2016 the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce hosted “Your Mental Health Matters,” an information session for employers and employees by Robin Ward, Program Coordinator at the Canadian Mental Health Association of New Brunswick. Ms Ward spoke about managing stress and achieving a healthy work/life balance.

The event also celebrated the life of former chamber of commerce intern, Kasey Atwin, who struggled with mental health issues before her death in 2015.

“When Kasey passed away so soon after finishing her internship at the chamber, it had a big impact on our team,” said Krista Ross, chamber CEO. “We thought this event was a fitting tribute to her time at the chamber and we were happy to see such a great turnout.”

The Canadian Mental Health Association, New Brunswick shared some staggering statistics at the event:

  • Health Canada estimates that the economic burden on employers is now close to $51 billion per year for mental health and addiction problems.
  • Burnout costs Canadian business $12 billion per year
  • 40% of sick time taken in Canada is a result of mental illness
  • 30-40% of disability claims in Canada are for depression

“Clearly mental health is a very important social and health issue that affects many of our family members, friends and colleagues, but it also has a big impact on the business community and economy as well,” said Keir Clark, chamber 2nd Vice President. “Finding the right work/life balance is not only good for employees, it’s good for business and the economy as well.”

The chamber also donated $1000.00 to the Canadian Mental Health Association in memory of Kasey. Pictured below are Victor and Debbie Atwin, Kasey’s father and stepmother, Robin Ward, Canadian Mental Health Association and Keir Clark, Fredericton Chamber of Commerce.

The event was sponsored by Wilson’s Insurance who provided aircleansing plants to all attendees, Edwina’s Catering and Stephen MacGillivray Photography.
