Fredericton Chamber of Commerce 2019 Summer Student Job Descriptions

The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is seeking students to work in our office this summer. We have been approved for two Canada Summer Jobs positions and are also accepting SEED vouchers. We may hire for some or all of the positions listed below (or multiple). Please indicate clearly on your application which position(s) you are interested in.

1. Policy and Research Assistant

The chamber’s Policy and Research Assistant will work primarily under the supervision of the Policy & Research Manager. The successful candidate may also work with other staff members from time-to-time.

The successful candidate will provide research and general office support under the supervision of the Chief Executive Officer and Policy and Research Manager. Specific duties may include: Research and provide reports on topics as assigned; Perform interviews with selected chamber members; Assist with preparation for meetings (compile backgrounders, bios, past correspondence, etc.); Organize and upload advocacy-relevant materials to the chamber’s website; Composing, conducting and distributing surveys; Attend meetings with government officials, chamber committees and other relevant stakeholders with the CEO and/or Policy & Research Manager; Prepare press releases and media advisories; Write blog entries, social media posts, etc; Review local, regional and national publications for relevant information.

Qualifications:

  • Research, editing and information synthesizing skills
  • Proficiency with Google-based software including Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendar
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Organized and attentive to detail

2. Event Assistant

The successful candidate will provide event and membership support to the chamber of commerce team. Over the duration of employment, the successful candidate will liaise with the chamber’s 900+ membership in person and in writing. Working with the chamber’s events and membership development managers, specific duties may include:

  • Assist in the planning and execution of the chamber’s annual golf tournament
  • Pre-planning for the Business Excellence Awards dinner
  • Conduct research and make recommendations as to how the chamber can change their current annual events
  • Day to day membership activities – preparing promotional material for distribution
  • Meeting new members/ potential new members
  • Interviewing existing members
  • Assist with the preparation of member meetings
  • Marketing of chamber events and benefits
  • Miscellaneous office duties including, but not limited to: filing, photocopying, and typing.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent computer skills including, but not limited to: proficiency in MS Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized and attentive to detail
  • Customer service experience
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize several projects
  • Knowledge of local business community an asset

3. Digital Media Assistant

The chamber’s Digital Media Assistant will be responsible for creating and updating digital content. This may include videos, various social media platforms, or other similar projects. Specific duties may include: planning, recording, editing and posting videos; creating and/or posting social media content; providing feedback and suggestions on current digital media presence; researching best practices or relevant topics that may be used to produce digital content; interview or otherwise interacting with members of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce; providing assistance on various events; regular office duties on an as-needed basis; other duties as required or apparent. The successful candidate will assist with other chamber activities as needed, such as events as well as miscellaneous office duties including, but not limited to: filing, photocopying, and typing.

Qualifications:

  • Able to create professional-looking digital content
  • Proficiency with Apple-based computer hardware and software
  • Proficiency with Google-based software including Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendar
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized and attentive to detail
  • Customer service experience
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize several projects
  • Knowledge of local business community an asset

4. Operations and Communications Assistant

The successful candidate will work primarily under the supervision of the Operations and Communications Manager and Event Manager. The student will help coordinate and execute a variety of functions regarding chamber operations, events, contact with members and other areas as become necessary. Specific duties may include:

  • Assisting with the implementation of surveys
  • Communicating directly with members or potential members orally and in writing
  • Providing input on marketing materials or other communication vehicles
  • Updating and promoting the Fredericton Community Calendar
  • Assisting with updating the chamber’s database and website
  • Providing input and support on social media strategies and content
  • Preparing information packages for current or potential members
  • Preparing materials, setting up, or other general support for meetings, events, or other similar activities
  • Filing, photocopying and other office-specific functions
  • Other duties as assigned or apparent.
