Who we are?
We are a national, bilingual not-for-profit organization that makes innovation possible for more people in more places across Canada and around the world. We make investing in new knowledge easier through access to top researchers, flexible project plans, and co-investments in talent. We work closely with businesses, researchers, and governments to create new pathways to safer cities, better healthcare, improved products, a cleaner environment, and a more diverse and inclusive economy.
We are dedicated to advancing collaborations between industry, academia, and government, and to nurturing international research networks between Canadian academic institutions and the world.
Mitacs is funded by the Government of Canada along with the Government of Alberta, the Government of British Columbia, Research Manitoba, the Government of New Brunswick, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Government of Nova Scotia, the Government of Ontario, Innovation PEI, the Government of Quebec, the Government of Saskatchewan, and the Government of Yukon.
Our history
Mitacs was founded in 1999 as a Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence, dedicated to supporting applied and industrial research in mathematical sciences and associated disciplines. In 2003, we launched a research internship program designed to increase deployment of highly educated graduates into the private sector. Open to all disciplines since 2007, Mitacs has expanded in response to the needs of academic institutions and Canada’s economy. Fully independent since 2011, Mitacs remains committed to its core vision of supporting evidence-based innovation and continues to work closely with partners in industry, academia, and government.
From aerospace systems to childhood literacy rates, Mitacs-funded projects help to strengthen connections, foster economic growth and productivity, and create jobs. Throughout our evolution over the last 20 years, Mitacs has attracted and helped retain international talent, and has deployed highly skilled talent from Canada’s universities and colleges and from around the world into all sectors of the Canadian economy.
We thank our partners for their support and involvement and look forward to more collaboration in the years to come.
Our name
Why the name “Mitacs”? The answer is part of our proud history. In our early days, Mitacs was known as “The Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems, (MITACS NCE) .” The acronym referred to our original mandate to connect mathematics researchers to industry and professional development opportunities.
When we became an independent, national not-for-profit organization in 2011, the acronym was phased out to reflect our expanded scope and vision.
We are now simply referred to as Mitacs.
